The Chautauqua event will be held in the communities of Stirling and Raymond in 2017 and in Cardston and Magrath in 2018. The goal of the Mormon Trail’s Chautauqua Sub-Committee is to create an annual historical, educational and tourism-oriented event that will draw a wide range of visitors to experience the unique cultures and history of our region.
Thankyou to everyone who prepared, sponsored and/or who attended the 2016 Hometown Christmas! There was an amazing turnout and the weather participated wonderfully. I have updated the event pages for our 2017 event (12th annual)! See you all then!
:Project pages for our 2017 Hometown Christmas have now been updated and the Eventbrite booking pages are now active (tables can be booked starting in Oct 2017):
YOU ARE INVITED!!!
The Magrath Chamber invites you to attend a noon hour webinar at the Magrath Town Hall on Thu April 28th. The webinar entitled "Unleashing local capital" is a one hour webinar explaining how communities can raise capital to finance local business development through the sale of RRSP and TFSA eligible shares, by establishing Opportunity Development Co-operative.
This webinar provides information on how Albertan communities have used the co-operative structure to pool capital to finance local business development, allow for community ownership within local economic development, and to build strong communities.
Participants will learn about the recent progress in local investing using the co-operative structure, how they can start a co-operative in their own community, as well as key regulatory and policy issues pertaining to raising capital using RRSPs and TFSAs. The webinar also discusses how local investing can be used for business succession planning, community owned renewable energy and more.

Notice: The Magrath Chamber has voted to cancel the 2016 Gala .. we would love your help and input as we plan to use this year to focus our energy and capacity on "building a more productive" Magrath.
Please note, we feel the past Galas have been successful in our goal of finding ways to build and sustain a strong community. Magrath has much potential. We need people -- come join your Chamber!
Local business owners were invited to view a presentation to the Town of Magrath by Axia. Their packages are comparable to current telco, cable, satellite offerings in price but with much faster speeds for uploads and no caps on monthly usage. Much faster speeds are available as well if needed - but at higher monthly rates of course. If you may be interested in signing up (1/3 of town required to express interest for them to consider building here), you can enter the Order Now form on their website. Plans as low as $59/mo for residential and $99/mo for business with 25mbps up/down all fibre optic internet (on 2 yr contract plus install fee). Many attending very excited at the prospect.
Table above prepared by R Davies of SSDirect in Oct 2015 from online offerings on the corresponding websites. If Axia would consider waiving or reducing the setup fee as an introductory offer, there would be no comparison (imho). Even with the initial setup fee however, the increased capacity more than offsets that for some, especially in the residential pricing. Aside: My business cable internet plan offers 'up to' 30 mbps down and a meager 2.5 mbps up with a monthly cap at 300gb .. and a fixed IP for about $90/mo. I could do much better with Axia.
Note: offerings from these companies are subject to change. The information above was compiled as of Oct 2015 from axia.com, telus.com, shaw.ca, and xplorenet.com ignoring temporary initial offers. You may be able to get a reduced introductory rate or enhanced/bundled services or hardware by playing one against the other. Personally I dislike the notion that my neighbor may be getting a secret deal not available to everyone - that should be illegal in my way of thinking. Note as well, that Axia provides only the internet. Some bundled services you get from the competitors may need to be set up from other sources or acquired independently. For example: email@example.com or @shaw.com or even @agt.net will no longer work if you switch companies - you would have to switch to something web-based like gmail.
And finally, I really don't see the justification for business vs residential rates, except that a business can write off expenses. The Axia presenter tried to justify the difference in an enhanced service level for business customers - but it doesn't make sense to me .. if everyone is promised 99.9% up time, the rates should be the same for everyone. And that is my opinion on that ..
