2014 will be our 4th annual CYB of the Year Gala .. this year with a Mardi Gras theme! Nominations are now closed and chamber voting underway .. with final tally expected by the first part of Jan 2014 .. Shannon Sabey and crew are gearing up for a fantastic event with bigger budget and more fun and entertainment for the entire town. It will be a night to remember!
Magrath 2012: "Year Two has passed and it is encouraging to see the seeds planted in Year One growing each year. The first annual Chamber Gala last year was a huge success. The 1940s mobster theme was a huge hit and lots of fun. It was great to see so many participate and so many dress the part. A great time was had by all and almost $4000 was raised for the Magrath Trail System at the south end of town. The Trail System will be an important addition to Magrath not only giving a safe place for people to walk and jog but to attract new people to the community and eventually tourists as well, as we eventually tie it in with the Mormon Trail initiative already being promoted by Raymond, Sterling and Cardston. This year’s [2012 gala theme was] a 1950s Happy Days theme .. I want to say congratulations to our Citizen, Youth and Business of the Year and I look forward to all the great things 2013 will bring to the Chamber and this great community.

- Magrath and District Citizen of the Year Award to be presented to the individual age 18 or better recognized as giving unselfishly to our vibrant community.
2014: Tyler Alston - Citizen of the YearMagrath and District Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year 2014 Mr Tyler Alston was born in Magrath, has lived here for 83 years and has been in business here for the past 63 years. He owned/operated the British American (BA) oil and gas dealership for 10 years, then a Gulf Oil service station/bulk station for another 10 years, and then a Petro Canada service station for 21 more years. In 1993, created the Blue Goose gas bar and convenience store with space for a full-time mechanic and later added a keylock for gas and diesel 24/7. Later he created Magrath Mini-Storage. Tyler still runs the oil and key lock business, as well as the mini-storage, and leases out the Blue Goose service station. In the community he served on the hospital board for 12 years, as an LDS Bishop for 5 years, as Stake President for 9 years , as temple volunteer for 20 years and was school bus driver for 42 years. He was a member of the Magrath Rod & Gun Club, the Magrath Curling Club and a supporter of 4H for over 40 years. He is truly a Magrath icon.

2013: Craig Bennett
Citizen of the Year 2013 Mr Craig Bennett Craig has worked for Lethbridge College for many years as an Instructor in the Building Trades, and has served Magrath for years as a fire fighter and eventually as Fire Chief and currently as a dedicated EMR worker with Magrath Emergency Services. He is a willing volunteer and shares his talents in singing at many community events.

2012: Herb McKelvey
In response to our announcement of his winning the Chamber Citizen of the Year 2012 award, Mr McKelvey wrote us a 2 page hand-written thankyou note.
He suggested that many more were deserving than him, but we are very pleased to be able to honor him, 'the nicest man in town', at this year's gala awards dinner.

2012: Honorary Parade Marshall
Our Chamber Citizen of the Year is called upon to act as the Honorary Parade Marshall in the following year at our Town of Magrath Celebrations (held on the 4th weekend in July).
2011: Elizabeth Spencer Davies Olsen
Born in Magrath, daughter of Clyde and Hazel (Ririe) Spencer, mother of five, grandmother of many more, a long time resident, retired school teacher in art and music at the Magrath Elementary, member of the local Lions Club, organizer of many town programs and events - Remembrance Day, Christmas Choirs, Speech Contests, painter of local fire hydrants, all in all a mover and a shaker. Not quite age 80 and still hard to keep up with. Just this year, headed and organized the No Cost Clothing event .. convincing her local Lions Club to take it on as a new project. She was also instrumental in asking the Lions to take on the annual Operation Christmas Child Christmas Box collections for the town, to name a few. She plays the piano and organ and still finds time to paint.
We were pleased to honor her with this simple plaque and feel she is a great choice for our Magrath Chamber Citizen of the Year 2011 |
