About our CYB Winners:
Citizen of the Year 2014 - Tyler Alston was born Aug. 4/1931, right here in Magrath, Alberta. He played on the Magrath Zeniths for 4 years (grade 8-11) and then he played on the Provo, Utah High boys basketball team. He married Gloria Harker on Dec. 15/1951. They had 5 children (Arana, Jane, Bill, Tom, Burke). In 1952, Tyler bought the British American (BA) oil and gas dealership for the Magrath area. He ran that business for 10 years and then Gulf Oil bought out BA. Tyler encouraged the new company to put a service station, as well as a bulk station in Magrath. The new facility was built in 1964. Tyler ran this business for 10 years and then Petro Canada bought Gulf and Tyler ran this business for 21 years. In 1993, Petro Canada decided to remove all the small town service stations in Southern Alberta. Tyler felt Magrath deserved a modern service station and so he bought the Blue Goose building (it had previously been a Chrysler car dealership). He completely remodeled the building and created the Blue Goose gas bar and convenience store. A few later he created a space for a full-time mechanic to operate out of. A few years later he put in a keylock, so farmers and individuals could get gas and diesel 24/7. A few years later he felt Magrath needed some storage spaces, so he created Magrath Mini-Storage. Tyler still runs the oil and key lock business ,as well as Magrath Mini-Storage. He leases out the service station. He has been in business in Magrath for 63 years straight. In the community he served on the hospital board for 12 years. He was an LDS Bishop for 5 years, a Stake President for 9 years , and a temple volunteer for 20 years and a school bus driver for 42 years. He played senior basketball on the Magrath Rockets and the Broder Chinooks for 10 years. He was a member of the Magrath Rod & Gun Club, the Magrath Curling Club and a supporter of 4H for over 40 years. Tyler was born in Magrath and has lived in Magrath for 83 years and as stated before he has been in business here in our town on a continual basis for the past 63 years. He is truly a Magrath icon.
