Minutes of Magrath Chamber of Commerce held at Keyline Publishing on May 17, 2012
Attendees: Russ Barnett Mayor, Duane Thomson, Vice President Allan Quinton Director Jay MacKenzie Pres and Ross Moore
Meeting called to order by Pres. Jay MacKenzie at 7:10
Ross Moore presented information on the trade show. There were 42 booths and 17 tables compared to 44 table sand 20 booths the previous year. Decision was made to move the show back to April and only have it on one day. This would get more tables out and might eliminate events being held on the same day as there were at least 4 events being held which took away spectators.
It will be a possibility for next year to have presentations upstairs. We will change the entrance from the west door to the south this will eliminate some of the cold air blowing in. Will look at getting heaters and have requested a quote with possibly Richard Spenser putting them in for free. We can also get deflectors to move the heat out from the walls where the heaters would be installed. There was a slight loss from the show but we also had purchased tables which had been included in the costs.
Motion to accept the report tendered by Duane Thomson voting - Unanimous
Duane Thomson then presented on his meeting with the trail system organization He advised that he had presented to them his ideas o the sign and the location etc. He talked about one sign that would be at the entrance to the walk path which would have areas for 3 stories to be shown. One would be about the Town of Magrath, the second could be about the frogs and the third could be on the Galt Canal story. This sign would be possibly in brick or stone ( should be same type etc that was used by pioneers)and should not be higher than 4 to 4.5 feet tall so the people could read the presentations but also see the canal etc ahead of them. Discussion was held about the bricks being sold and where they would be put and how can we make it possible to add more in the future as they have only sold 60 bricks so far.
Other discussion was held on the signage we could access from the Badlands. They will pay half the sign costs but they are expensive signs. Also the Badlands name is to be featured very prominently and can be on the sign or on a large rock by the sign. Possibility was that we would have two signs at the trail head . Town council wants to consider all options for development of this area. Mayor advised that the town is holding on June 9 a work day down at the trail head. He also showed areas they were considering for development with parking etc.
Motion to accept this report by Ross Moore voting unanimous
Duane Thomson then presented a report on the Mormon Trail He had prepared and printed for the Mormon trail organization a pamphlet that had a twofold purpose it was first to tap into the cultural tourist and secondly to give information to tourists called day trippers who are immediate area residents who are coming into another part of this area. This pamphlet is being distributed at trade shows town offices and tourism offices.
There is a Historical LDS conference being held in Calgary and Lynn Rosenvelt is one of the presenters and he will talk on this area. They also have developed some bus tours which will be coming down July 2 to see this area. We also know of 2 buses that have been organized by Canadian Badlands and Galt Museum to come down in July as well. We need to have a local meeting to go over the information on this trail and what it can mean to the town with increased tourism in the area. Residents need to know about it so they can give informed answers etc. We have the ability of having Allan Gibson and Jeff Shaw come for a meeting. Russ Barnett volunteered to present this to the various LDS Wards in the area. We will see if we can leave pamphlets at winks and the Blue Goose and possibly a display at the library or at the town office Duane is to make some posters advertising the Mormon trail -- Motion passed.
Motion to adjourn presented by Ross Moore at 8:25am
