- Last meeting minutes reviewed and accepted. Noted front page coverage for our Youth of the Year in the 28 March issue of the Westwinds. They covered Business and Citizen of the Year in prior issues.
- Roger Davies reported that we currently have 24 paid members for 2013. See magrathchamber.com/members.html for the current list (and please let us know if anyone was missed). Membership payments can now be made online (or even the old fashioned way). See magrathchamber.com/membership-application.html for the how to.
- Richard Spencer reported on plans for upcoming 3rd annual Chamber Tradeshow on Sat 13 Apr 2013. On track as expected. We are just over 50% booked with potential for 32 booths and 32 tables with 3 weeks to go. Ross Moore commented that this was similar to last years bookings. Roger Davies has updated website information and is fielding inquiries, many via Kijiji .. Richard is continuing to contact potential vendors - Raymond Chamber will send out an email to their contacts for us (Thanks, eh).
- Duane Thomson presented a motion to prepare for a public Town Hall style meeting in May 2013 re Economic Development in Magrath and other current business issues. All in favor. Next meeting (18 Apr) will be dedicated to identification of issues: eg (a) how to attract more Doctors to Magrath, (b) availability of suitable property for business development/business park, (c) business tax/fee issues, (d) enforcement of licence/permits, etc. Discussed possible dates for event - Wed 8 May or Sat 25 May. Wed evenings conflict with Town meetings, Seniors night and youth programs. Thu evening conflicts with stake meetings. Sat 25 is available. To be discussed at next meeting.

Both Roe and his wife Cindy were recently named the Magrath Business of the Year by the local Chamber of Commerce and were honoured earlier this year at the Magrath Community Gala. “Thanks to the town of Magrath for their support, this wouldn’t have happened without them,” said Roe of his designation. In addition to being thrilled about her nomination Murphy is also appreciative of the Magrath Chamber of Commerce for choosing her, she said. |
Centered around the celebration of the Citizen, Business and Youth of the Year, the celebration also aimed to raise funds for the Magrath Trail in conjunction with the event. This year almost $5,000 was raised to be put towards finishing the paving of the Magrath Trail As with any organization volunteerism is at the heart of the chamber. Businesses who question what the chamber does for them need to realize, they are the chamber. The benefit they receive from membership is directly related to what they give to the chamber. |
